Maersk zet eerste grote methanolschip in de vaart
December 13, 2023 - Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced it will begin operating the first of 18 large methanol-powered container ships on the Asia-Europe trade route in February.
The container vessel built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea has a nominal capacity of 16,000 containers and is equipped with a dual-fuel engine enabling operations on methanol as well as biodiesel and conventional fuel, according to Maersk.
Green methanol, produced either from biomass or captured carbon and hydrogen from renewable power, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from container ships by 60% to 95% compared with conventional fossil fuels, Reuters said.
