December 12, 2023 - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has introduced emergency legislation to salvage his embattled Rwanda asylum plan and deliver on his pledge to “stop the boats.”

The goal is to ensure that migrants entering the UK by illegal means face a one-way trip to the East African country.

But in November, the Supreme Court -- the highest court in the UK -- ruled the policy unlawful and could not go ahead as it was, concluding there was a real risk Rwanda could return genuine refugees to their home country, where they would face “ill-treatment.”

Now Sunak is braced for a showdown on his Rwanda bill in the House of Commons that could fatally undermine his authority as rival Tory factions make conflicting demands of the prime minister.

Sunak’s migration scheme is splitting the Conservative Party.

The European Research Group -- the party’s euro-sceptic caucus -- says the bill provides “a partial and incomplete solution to the problem of legal challenges in the UK courts.” The
