Canada evacueert stad Yellowknife
August 17, 2023 - The 20,000 residents of Yellowknife, capital of Canada’s Northwest province, have been ordered to leave as a 163,00-hectare wildfire closes in on the city.
The fire was already within 17km of the Yellowknife by Aug 17, and is expected to reach Highway 3, the only highway connecting the city with the rest of Canada, at which point evacuation will become much more difficult. Barring rainfall, it is expected to reach the city by the weekend.
Canada has been experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperature records falling daily, causing wildfires in parts of nearly all the country’s provinces and territories.
