August 16, 2023 - Japan cancelled nearly 900 flights and ordered 240,000 people to move to safety as slow-moving Typhoon Lan crossed the island of Honshu, cutting power to tens of thousands of homes.

Typhoon Lan made landfall early on Tuesday, some 400km (250 miles) southwest of Tokyo, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds and forcing authorities to issue flood and landslide alerts.

The typhoon -- which followed closely on the heels of Typhoon Khanun during Japan’s peak Obon holiday season -- Typhoon Lan had sustained winds of 150km/h (93mph) and moved northwest across the main island of Honshu.

According to Japan’s weather agency, it reached the Sea of Japan early Wednesday and continues north along the sea.
