Zuid-Korea evacueert duizenden scouts in aanloop naar storm
July 25, 2023 - Thousands of scouts attending the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea are being evacuated ahead of the arrival of a severe tropical storm, days after hundreds fell ill amid soaring temperatures.
Around 36,000 scouts will be evacuated from the event’s campsite in Saemangeum, near Buan, to areas outside the storm’s path before the scheduled end date of August 12 due to storm Khanun, which is expected to make landfall over the Korean peninsula in the coming days.
Originally classified as a typhoon, the weather system has weakened but is still bringing high winds and torrential rain to the region.
The event, which attracted more than 40,000 scouts from 158 countries, has been plagued by issues since it started, including a heatwave that resulted in hundreds of participants being treated for heat-related ailments, and reports of poor sanitation, waterlogged conditions caused by heavy rain, as well as rotten food and swarms of mosquitoes and flies.
The UK, U.S. and Singapore have already pulled their teams from the campsite.
