July 1, 2023 - July 31, 2023 - Events in July include the NATO summit in Vilnius, a Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg. general elections in Spain, the launching of the European space telescope Euclid, Madonna’s Celebration Tour and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Jul 1, Space: Euclid, a European space telescope designed to explore the evolution of the dark universe to a sharper degree than ever before, is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral.

Jul 6, UK: Two rare Rembrandt portraits go under the hammer at Christie’s, 199 years after they were first sold there. The rediscovered paintings are believed to be the last known portraits by the artist in private hands.

Jul 11-12, Lithuania: NATO holds a summit in Vilnius, just 200km from the Russian border, at which Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expects to receive a clear signal and “formula” for Ukraine to eventually become a member of the military alliance.

Jul 15, Canada: Madonna embarks on an 80-show Celebration Tour marking 40 years of stardom. It begins in Vancouver with further dates across North America and Europe until January 2024.

Jul 20-Aug 20, Australia, New Zealand: The FIFA Women’s World Cup sees 32 nations competing to become world champions, up from 24 in 2019, when the USA lifted the trophy for the fourth time.

Jul 21, U.S.: Two films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, go head-to-head at the box office. Will the female-fuelled movie starring
Margot Robbie, or acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s epic drama, come out on top?.

Jul 23, Spain: The conservative People’s Party’s lead over Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s PSOE-led coalition is shaping the
election into a choice between a government that includes either the far-right Vox party, or the far-left Podemos.

Jul 27-28, Russia: Many African leaders are expected to attend the second Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg. African nations have been badly hit by the inflationary surge triggered by Russia’s war in Ukraine, especially in cereals.
