By Jordi Bou & Ninian Carter

June 20, 2023 - Rescuers face a race against time to find the missing submersible exploring the wreck of the Titanic as people trapped inside have roughly 40 hours of breathable air left, U.S. Coast Guard says.

Speaking at a press conference to provide an update on the search and rescue operation, Captain Jamie Frederick from the First Coast Guard District said that there is about 40 hours of breathable air left on the sub, based on the initial reports of 96 hours left.

British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman are two of the five on board, along with British businessman and explorer Hamish Harding.

Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former French Navy diver who has explored the Titanic before, is also on the vessel, as is Stockton Rush, chief executive of OceanGate – the firm behind the dive.

The wreckage of the Titanic that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg lies at about 3,800 metres.
