Processie voor de kroning van Koning Charles III

By Phil Bainbridge

May 6, 2023 - The coronation ceremony for King Charles III and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at London’s Westminster Abbey.

The King and Queen Consort will travel from Buckingham Palace in the new Diamond Jubilee Coach and return from Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach used for every coronation since 1831. The service will start at 11:00am.

Whilst the Gold State Coach has been used in every coronation since William IV, it has not been popular with monarchs through the ages. The late Queen Elizabeth II later described her coronation procession as a horrible and uncomfortable journey, due in part to the leather strap suspension. Built in 1762, the four-tonne carriage has to be pulled by eight horses at walking pace due to its age and weight.

In contrast, the Diamond Jubilee State Coach was built in Australia in 2012 to include heating and air conditioning, electric windows and hydraulic suspension for an altogether more comfortable ride. The 3-tonne coach celebrates hundreds of years of British history with wood and artefacts including from Henry VIII's warship the Mary Rose, Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory, Sir Issac Newton's apple tree and the Scottish stone of destiny built into its fabric. It will be pulled by six Windsor Grey horses
