Taiwan onder hernieuwde druk om niet in zee te gaan met VS

By Ninian Carter

March 30, 2023 - Taiwan, under pressure from China not to engage with the rest of the world, has formal diplomatic relations with only 13 countries since Honduras severed ties in favour of China.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has arrived in the United States on a diplomatically sensitive visit amid mounting external pressure from China, which constantly tries to prevent the island from engaging with the rest of the world.

On March 26, 2023, Taiwan was dealt a blow when Honduras ended diplomatic relations with the island, saying it now only recognised China.

This leaves Taiwan with formal diplomatic relations with only 13 countries. They are:

Belize
Eswatini
Guatemala
Haiti
Marshall Islands
Nauru
Palau
Paraguay
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Tuvalu
Vatican City

China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has repeatedly warned U.S. officials not to meet Tsai, vowing retaliation if they do.
