OEKRAÏNE

Situatie Oekraïne dag 285

By Phil Bainbridge

December 5, 2022 - Ukraine says it will continue plans to mount offensive operations through winter, when the frozen ground is harder than the November mud, contradicting a U.S. assessment that both sides would pause until spring.

Both Russia and Ukraine have nevertheless continued to fight despite the muddy conditions and show no sign of abating. The hard freeze later in December should provide better conditions for mechanised warfare, and Ukraine are keen to press their advantage after recent successes, whereas the spring thaw usually results in swollen rivers and flooded fields.

Russia has focused much of its efforts on Donetsk Oblast and in particular Bakhmut, where Ukraine says the Russians are paying a heavy price, losing over 50 troops every day.

On the international stage, Russia has said it will only sell oil at market prices and will refuse to sell any oil under the price cap agreed by the EU, G7 and Australia, even if it means cutting production. OPEC+ , which includes Russia, again agreed to maintain its output targets, a reduction of 2% of world demand, keeping prices high.
