Hevige uitbarsting vulkaan Shiveluch dreigt

November 22, 2022 - Volcanic activity is increasing in Russia’s far east, with the Shiveluch volcano potentially gearing up for its first powerful eruption in 15 years.

Six volcanoes in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula are currently showing signs of increased activity, including the Shiveluch and Eurasia's highest active volcano Klyuchevskaya Sopka, which began erupting last Thursday.

Kamchatka is home to 29 active volcanoes, part of a vast belt of Earth known as the “Ring of Fire” which circles the Pacific Ocean and is prone to eruptions and frequent earthquakes.

Big eruptions in the peninsula can spew glass, rock and ash into the sky, posing risk to international air traffic.
