Ontslagen bij Amazon dragen bij aan deproblemen in technologiesector

By Ninian Carter

November 15, 2022 - Amazon is the latest tech firm said to be about to lay off thousands of staff as the sector reels from falling stock prices in the face of a globally grim economic outlook.

According to people in the know, Amazon is about to lay off 10,000 employees – its biggest ever staff cull.

The cuts, first reported by the New York Times, equate to about 3% of Amazon's corporate staff, or less than 1% of its total workforce when taking into account warehouse and transportation jobs.

Insiders say the cuts will mostly eliminate jobs within its devices department, which make Alexa gadgets, among other things.

The news comes after a wave of lay-offs across the technology sector, which is watchful of recession after years of unimpeded staff hirings.

Earlier this month, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced more than 11,000 redundancies, and Twitter, now under the stewardship of Elon Musk, laid off more than 8,000 workers.
