Frankrijk stopt met anti-jihadistische operatie in Sahel

November 9, 2022 - President Emmanuel Macron has announced an official end to France’s nearly nine-year-long Operation Barkhane, its anti-jihadist mission in the Sahel region of Africa.

At its high point, there were 5,500 French troops taking part in Operation Barkhane, which was initially launched in 2013 to stem the advance of jihadist insurgents in Mali. The other countries in the partnership were Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania, according to the BBC.

Some 3,000 French troops will remain in Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso – but they will not act independently, only in co-ordinated actions with national armies. Significantly, this continuing deployment will have no official name, indicating that it is no longer an “external operation” as Barkhane was, the BBC said.
