Iran demonstreert tegen dood van vrouw

By Duncan Mil

September 30, 2022 - Protests continue in cities across Iran against the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody as a human rights group says at least 83 people are reported dead in nearly two weeks of demonstrations.

Mahsa Amini, 22, from the Iranian Kurdish town of Saqez, was arrested on September 14 in Tehran for “unsuitable attire” by the so-called morality police that enforces the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.

Amini’s cousin, Erfan Mortezaei, described the arrest. Speaking to Sky News, Mortezaei said Mahsa had gone shopping in Tehran with relatives, including her brother, Ashkan. When they saw Mahsa, the morality police decided her hijab was not correct.

“Ashkan tried to explain to them they were not in their home city, and were strangers in Tehran, so please take that into consideration.”

“The police officers pepper-sprayed Ashkan in the face and forced Mahsa into the van and took her to the morality police station.”

Mortezaei said a witness in the police van told the family what happened next.

“During the journey to the police station, she was tortured,” he said. She fainted at the police station before being taken to Tehran’s Kasra hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“She suffered a concussion from a blow to the head,” Mortezaei said.

Norway-based Iran Human Rights have reported the deaths of at least 83 people in the nationwide protests across 15 of Iran’s 31 provinces.
