Raket raakt bijna kerncentrale Oekraïne

September 20, 2022 - A powerful Russian missile exploded less than 300 metres from the reactors of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, about 110km north of the city of Mykolaiv, escalating fears of a radiation disaster.

The blast which took place shortly after midnight on Monday damaged power plant buildings as well as a nearby hydroelectric power plant and transmission lines. All three reactors were operating normally, according to Reuters.

Another Ukrainian nuclear power plant at Zaporizhya – which is Europe’s largest and lies about 250 km east of the Mykolaiv site – was shut down earlier this month due to Russian shelling, prompting concerns about a possible nuclear disaster, Reuters said.
