ROYALTY

Begrafenisstoet van Koningin Elizabeth II (2)

By Jordi Bou

September 9, 2022 - Before the state funeral, the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II will be borne from Buckingham Palace, through the streets of London, to Westminster Hall in slow procession, where it will lie in state for about four days, allowing members of the public to pay their respects.

Preceding the funeral on Sep 19, the Queen’s coffin will be borne from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for the beginning of four days’ lying in state. The coffin will be carried on a horse-drawn gun carriage of The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, accompanied by a military parade and members of the Royal Family.

Lying in state is usually reserved for sovereigns, current or past queens consort, and sometimes former prime ministers.

During the formal occasion, the closed coffin will rest on a raised platform – known as a catafalque – in the middle of the vast, medieval Westminster Hall, the oldest building within the Palace of Westminster. The hall will be open to the public, 24 hours a day, for four days.

The last member of the Royal Family to lie in state was the Queen Mother in 2002, when more than 200,000 people queued up to view her coffin.
