Levensgevaarlijke tyfoon Hinnamnor stormt Zuid-Korea binnen

By Ninian Carter

September 5, 2022 - South Korea is bracing for potentially the most powerful storm in its history – Typhoon Hinnamnor. The giant tropical storm is expected to make landfall near the port city of Busan.

Typhoon Hinnamnor is poised to sweep over most of South Korea on Tuesday, forcing flight cancellations, suspensions of businesses and closures of schools, as the country raises its typhoon-alert to its highest level.

Hinnamnor is expected to make landfall near South Korea’s port city of Busan early on Tuesday. On Monday, Shanghai’s Yangshan port in China had to halt operations as the storm swept past.

The typhoon is travelling northwards at 24 kilometres an hour, with wind speeds in excess of 200km/h. On August 30, Hinnamnor became the first category 5 storm of the year (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale).

In South Korea, no casualties have been reported so far, although more than 100 people have been evacuated and at least 11 facilities damaged by floods.

As well as China and South Korea, Hinnamnor is also expected to impact Japan and southeastern Russia.
