Europa brandt, hittegolf gaat noordwaarts

By Ninian Carter

July 19, 2022 - A deadly heatwave in Western Europe has pushed as far north as the UK and fuelled ferocious wildfires across France, Spain and Portugal.

A ferocious heatwave that is scorching Europe, pushed northwards into the UK on Monday, fuelling wildfires in Spain and France and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.

Hundreds of heat-related deaths have been reported across Spain and Portugal, as high temperatures grip the continent, triggering wildfires from Portugal to the Balkans.

Other areas, including northern Italy, are experiencing extended droughts, and the UK is expected to record its highest ever temperature on Tuesday – likely to be 42°C.

In France, heat records were broken as swirling hot winds spread wildfires across the southwest, forcing authorities to evacuate whole towns. In all, more than 31,000 people have been forced from their homes and holiday accommodation in the Gironde region since the fires began a week ago.

Climate scientists believe heatwaves like this one are becoming more intense, more frequent and longer-lasting because of climate change – with their intensity set to increase in years to come.
