European Union leaders meet in Brussels following the European Council’s decision to grant “candidate status” to Ukraine to join the blocand is expected to be accepted as a candidate to join the European Union.
Any country that satisfies the conditions for membership can apply. These conditions are known as the ‘Copenhagen criteria’ and include a functioning market economy, a stable democracy and the rule of law, and the acceptance of all EU legislation, including the euro. The approval of the Ukrainian application marks the start of what will be a years-long process, but it also signals a massive geopolitical shift which looks likely to provoke Russia.
