Plan NAVO om oostflank te versterken

June 20, 2022 - NATO is considering ways to bolster its eastern flank with troops deployed at short notice to eight existing battlegroups, and the option of scaling up to brigade-size in the face of threats.

The allies are considering adapting a new German model in their long-term defence planning amid tensions over the invasion of Ukraine. Germany’s plan involves identifying units that can be deployed to Lithuania at short notice and link up with German and allied troops already on the ground, as well as placing key equipment ahead of time, according to Bloomberg.

The approach would be an alternative to basing new troops more permanently in the most vulnerable member states. Lithuania is among Baltic nations that have made urgent requests for more troops, Bloomberg said.

NATO says it has placed over 40,000 troops under its direct command, mainly on the eastern flank.
