Amazon begint met leveringen met drones

By Jordi Bou

June 16, 2022 - After nearly a decade of development, Amazon says it will begin delivering parcels by drone for the first time later this year, pending final regulatory approval.

Amazon's latest delivery drone, the MK27-2, can carry parcels as heavy as 2.3kg to shoppers within 30 minutes.

The drone is fitted with multiple, computer-linked sensors to avoid collisions.

If the regulatory approval goes through, it will be a major milestone for Amazon, which has been promising some version of aerial package delivery for almost a decade. The company has had some major setbacks, including a handful of crashes, reports of alleged safety lapses, and high turnover.

In December 2016, the company ran an apparently successful trial in Cambridge, UK. A package was delivered, by drone, in 13 minutes.

The online retailer said that customers in Lockeford, California, would be among the first to receive drone deliveries later this year.

Amazon is competing against Wing, UPS and many smaller companies to create devices capable of delivering emergency supplies and consumer goods within minutes.
