Zo kan Britse premier worden weggestemd
June 1, 2022 - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, under renewed pressure over “Partygate”, could be removed from office by fellow Conservatives.
A growing number of Conservative members of parliament (MPs) have withdrawn support for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following last week’s publication of a damning report cataloguing a series of illegal parties in Downing Street during Covid-19 lockdowns.
The once-popular Johnson has apologised for his behaviour and lack of leadership in allowing parties to go ahead during lockdown, but has refused to resign.
As of Wednesday afternoon, at least 28 Conservative lawmakers (aka MPs) have publicly called on Johnson to quit, with many adding that they have written letters to the 1922 Committee, expressing their lack of confidence in the prime minister – the first step required in seeking a leadership challenge.
If the 1922 Committee receives 54 letters of no confidence (15% of Conservative MPs), it will trigger a speedy ballot that will determine if Johnson stays or goes. If at least 180 of the 359 MPs vote for his ousting, it will ultimately lead to a new leadership postal ballot among members of the Conservative Party, to choose a new leader. It will not trigger a general election.
