WERELDAGENDA

Wereldgebeurtenissen die voor februari op stapel staan

By Jordi Bou

February 1, 2022 - February 28, 2022 - Each month Graphic News publishes a World Agenda of forthcoming events that will shape the world in the month ahead. Events in February include the Beijing Winter Olympics, military exercises between Belarus and Russia that are unnerving the West, elections in five Indian states, the Lunar New Year, and Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Feb 1, Asia: An estimated two billion people – in Asia and beyond – celebrate the Lunar New Year. 2022 represents the Year of the Tiger, an animal that symbolizes strength, power and prosperity in the Chinese zodiac.

Feb 4-20, China: Beijing hosts the Winter Olympics, becoming the first city to stage both the Summer and Winter Games. The sporting event is overshadowed by a diplomatic boycott over China’s human rights record, and the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Feb 6, UK: Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first British Monarch to observe a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne.

Feb 10, India: Over 180 million voters in five states go to the polls in a closely watched electoral battle that will be crucial in gauging the popularity of Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of general elections in 2024.

Feb 10-20, Belarus: Joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus near the border with Ukraine are increasing fears in the West that Moscow is preparing for an invasion. Russia denies such plans.

Feb 17, France: At the sixth summit between the European and African Unions, EU leaders aim to present a global license deal that would allow African countries to manufacture their own coronavirus vaccines.

Feb 26, U.S.: George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic man, shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a scuffle in Florida 10 years ago. He was not arrested, and his acquittal one year later spawned the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Feb 28, Egypt: The African nation celebrates a century of independence. The Kingdom of Egypt was established when Britain’s protectorate over Egypt, set up in 1882, came to a close.
