WETENSCHAP

Minder dan twee minuten tot het einde van de wereld

By Jordi Bou

January 20, 2022 - The Doomsday Clock, which indicates how near our planet is to annihilation, stands at 100 seconds to midnight – the closest it has ever been – for the third year in a row.

With war looming between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing climate disaster and the coronavirus pandemic, the panel decided to keep the minute hand at its most dangerous position since the concept began in 1947.

Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit group that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer to or farther from destruction.

The idea began in 1945, when scientists working on the Manhattan Project – developing the world’s first nuclear weapons – created the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists of Chicago (BAS) to warn humanity of the dangers of nuclear war. Two years later, BAS launched its Doomsday Clock.
