President Bidens goedkeuringsbeoordeling

By Duncan Mil

January 19, 2022 - As President Joe Biden nears the one-year mark of his presidency, Americans are growing frustrated with his handling of the pandemic and the economy. The daily poll of polls from Five Thirty Eight shows that 42.3 per cent of likely U.S. voters approve of President Biden’s job performance, while 52.4 per cent disapprove.

Biden’s approval rating was constantly in the 50s until August. It flipped from positive to negative with the Taliban victory in Afghanistan and disorderly withdrawal of U.S. troops.

In the 2020 presidential election, Biden won more votes than any presidential candidate in U.S. history -- 81 million compared with Barack Obama’s previous record of 69.5 million in 2008. Yet, just 12 months into his term, he is one of the country’s most unpopular presidents.

The U.S. economy ended 2021 in solid shape, with GDP growth of 7.6 per cent in the final quarter of the year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The jobless rate, 6.3 per cent when Biden took office, was just 3.9 per cent in December, with around six million jobs added since Biden took office. Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. lost three million jobs.

Biden’s troubles started with his botched Afghanistan withdrawal and the deaths of 13 U.S. service members at Kabul airport.

Faced with a surge of the Delta and Omicron variants of coronavirus, Biden concedes that eradicating the virus is unlikely.

And finally, on January 13, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the president’s rule requiring workers at large companies to be vaccinated or masked and tested weekly.
