Dodelijke overstromingen treffen Canada’s grootste haven

By Jordi Bou

November 17, 2021 - A storm described as a once-in-a-century event has severed road and rail access around the Canadian city of Vancouver.

At least one person has been killed and several more are feared dead after a huge storm hit the Pacific north-west, destroying highways and leaving tens of thousands of people in Canada and the U.S. without power.

Canada's largest port in the city of Vancouver has been suspended, and the shipments of food,
fuel and other goods have been halted.

The port moves about $440m worth of cargo every day, according to Reuters news agency. Fuel pipelines in the area have also been turned off as a precaution.

It comes after British Columbia suffered a record high heat wave over the summer that killed more than 500 people, and wildfires that destroyed an entire town.
