Xi Jinping legt basis voor derde termijn

By Jordi Bou

November 11, 2021 - The Chinese Communist Party has approved a “historical resolution” that cements Xi Jinping’s grip on power, a year before he is expected to seek an unprecedented third term as president.

It is only the third resolution of its kind in the party’s 100-year history. The two previous resolutions were passed under Mao Zedong, who led the Communists to power in 1949, and Deng Xiaoping, whose reforms in the 1980s turned China into an economic powerhouse.

The “historical resolution” came at the culmination of the sixth plenum of the party’s central committee, a group of about 370 members that chooses its new leaders every five years, which had run since Monday behind closed doors in Beijing.

The official summary of the resolution from the meeting said that under Xi’s leadership, China had “made historic achievements and undergone a historic transformation”.

Some analysts see the resolution as Xi’s latest attempt to turn back decades of decentralisation by Chinese leaders that began under Deng Xiaoping and continued through other leaders like Jiang Zemin – a sign that China might be moving back to a so-called cult of personality.

In 2018, the National People’s Congress – China’s rubber-stamp parliament – voted to abolish term limits for presidency, effectively allowing Xi to remain in power for life.
