Weta Digital verkocht aan videogame-gigant Unity Software

By Ninian Carter

November 10, 2021 - Unity Software, a 3D video game engine developer, is acquiring Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital effects company for $1.625 billion.

Unity’s acquisition of Weta Digital is seen as a way for the game software developer to enable the next generation of real-time 3D content for the Metaverse, the so-called next version of the Internet – a theoretical always-on, persistent virtual 3D world with its own economy, jobs, shopping areas and media to consume.

The deal will allow Unity to license Weta’s advanced software tools to creators all over the world through a cloud-based workflow, with software-as-a-service pricing to be announced at a later date.

Under the deal, Unity is obtaining the Weta Digital suite of visual effects tools – with names like Manuka, Lumberjack, Loki, and Barbershop – and its team of 275 engineers, who will join Unity’s Create Solutions division.

Weta is famed for its creation of lifelike digital characters such as Gollum from “The Lord of The Rings” and Caesar from the recent “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, to name but two.
