25 Jaar Tomb Raider

By Ninian Carter

October 25, 2021 - Originally created by a small, six-person UK developer, Tomb Raider has grown into one of the biggest video game franchises in the world, selling 84 million copies and spawning several Hollywood movies.

Tomb Raider is a media franchise that began life as an action-adventure video game series created by British gaming company Core Design – formerly owned by Eidos Interactive, then by Square Enix Europe.

The franchise focuses on fictional British archaeologist Lara Croft, who travels the world in search of lost artefacts – usually having to infiltrate dangerous tombs and ruins.

Toby Gard, the creator of Lara Croft, was influenced by the anarchic Tank Girl graphic novels and the Indiana Jones movies.

Gameplay generally involves the exploration of hostile environments, solving puzzles and avoiding deadly traps, hostile forces or creatures.

Development of Tomb Raider, the first video game, began in 1994 and was released on October 25, 1996. It sold over 7 million copies worldwide, spawning many sequels, movie adaptations, comic books and novels.
