Race om opvolging Duterte in Filipijnen

By Jordi Bou

October 5, 2021 - President Rodrigo Duterte’s surprise retirement from politics when his term ends in 2022 clears the way for his daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for the presidency.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, 43, succeeded her father as mayor of the southern city of Davao in 2010. She is the frontrunner in all recent polls but has given mixed messages about running for high office.

Among other possible candidates to replace President Duterte are Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, son and namesake of the country’s former dictator, former actor and city mayor Francisco Domagoso – known by his screen name Isko Moreno – and newly retired boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

The stakes for the Philippines could not be higher. Once one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, the country has been battered by the pandemic.

Deadline for filing candidacies is October 8, but parties can until mid-November replace a candidate who dies, withdraws, or is disqualified by the country’s election commission.
