Trudeau’s gooi naar de meerderheid kan averechts werken
September 9, 2021 - Since calling a snap election to try to capitalise on his management of the pandemic and win a majority in parliament, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau has struggled to overcome voter fatigue.
Trudeau, 49, has pre-empted the country’s election schedule by two years, reckoning that a majority government is needed to “finish the fight” against the coronavirus.
But since calling the snap election, the Liberal party that he leads in a minority government has slid down the polls. The Conservatives, the main opposition party, have been rising and have a shot at winning the 20 September election.
Trudeau calculated that the Conservatives were weak as the pandemic has limited the profile of their unassuming leader, Erin O’Toole. But with a fourth wave of the coronavirus taking hold in Canada just as children are returning to school, voters are in no mood for a needless ballot.
