Lionel Messi: Cartière in cijfers

By Chris Dinsdale

August 11, 2021 - Arguably the best player of his generation, Lionel Messi is to move to French club Paris St. Germain, ending a remarkable 17-year career with his beloved Barcelona.

After a summer in which the Argentina captain claimed his first Copa America title for his country -- ending a tortuous wait for national silverware -- Lionel Messi’s 17-year career at Barcelona has come to an end. The elusive forward has agreed to sign for French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal following Barcelona’s decision not to pursue a new contract, citing financial fair play rules.

At Barcelona, Messi hoisted 35 trophies, including 10 Spanish La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for the club, and won six Ballon d’Or awards. Undoubtedly one of the greatest players to grace the Nou Camp pitch, he has broken numerous club, league and international records.

He joins Paris St-Germain, who have completed a remarkable summer transfer window, signing Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, Spanish defender Sergio Ramos and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, all on free transfers, before the marquee signing of Messi. The Parisian club hope that Messi, who will play with a fearsome attack of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, will unlock their quest for Champions League glory.
