TOKYO 2020
Groei en evolutie van de Paralympische Spelen
August 24, 2021 - September 5, 2021 - Tokyo will become the first city to host the Paralympics twice, having previously held them in 1964. The Games have grown into the world’s third largest sporting event behind the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup.
In 1964, 378 athletes from 21 countries competed in nine sports – the first time a Paralympic Games had been held in Asia. The sports were archery, athletics, dartchery, snooker, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair fencing.
It is anticipated that around 4,400 athletes will take part in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics – a more than 11-fold increase from 1964. A total of 22 sports will feature at the Games, with badminton and taekwondo included for the first time.
