Amazon verstevigt Prime Video met aankoop MGM

By Ninian Carter

May 26, 2021 - E-commerce giant Amazon has struck a deal to buy the 97-year-old movie studio MGM – paying about 40% more than other prospective buyers, such as Apple and Comcast, believed it to be worth.

Amazon is to buy the famous MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) movie studio for $8.45bn, giving it access to a large back catalogue of movies – although the MGM production lot and pre-1986 film library were sold off years ago.

The deal will boost Prime Video's content with around 17,000 television shows and 4,000 feature films, including the Rocky franchise and all the James Bond movies.

Additionally, it is expected that some of MGM's intellectual properties will be adapted into serialised streaming shows, unique to Amazon's platform. Although, don't expect to see a James Bond streaming show anytime soon.

Barbara Broccoli and her brother, Michael G. Wilson retain creative control over Bond despite the sale, deciding whether TV spin-offs get made or not – so far they have denied all such requests.
