Roep om vrijgave patenten COVID-vaccins

By Phil Bainbridge

May 7, 2021 - The U.S. has joined India and South Africa in calling for a waiver on COVID vaccine patents, to allow any manufacturer in the world to produce their own copies without fear of infringing intellectual property rights.

Germany has opposed this, claiming manufacturing capacity and high quality standards are limiting production, not patents, while Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said theirs are the only facilties that can manufacture
mRNA vaccines. However, a number of other EU states including Spain have expressed cautious support for the U.S. proposal.

Pharmaceutical investors have also warned against the move, claiming
that it could discourage investment in these companies, just as the industry has proved that they are the only ones capable of delivering a solution to the crisis.
