Deby van Tsjaad klaar voor zesde termijn

By Jordi Bou

April 11, 2021 - Voters in Chad go to the polls for an election in which President Idriss Deby is running for a sixth term to extend his three-decade rule. Deby, 68, seized power in 1990 in coup and pushed through a new constitution in 2018 that could allow him to stay in power until 2033.

Deby, who took the title of "Marshal" last year, will face six candidates after the supreme court barred seven others.

Chad has been an oil producer since 2003, but remains mired in need.

It was ranked 187th out of 189 on the Human Development Index (HDI) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2020. Power cuts in the capital N'Djamena can sometimes last days.

In 2018, 42 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
