Groot Egyptisch Museum gaat eind 2021 open

September 22, 2021 - The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum, described as the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation, is due to open on the outskirts of Cairo. Approximately 100,000 ancient artifacts will be on display, including the complete Tutankhamun collection.

The 60,000-square-metre building has been built on a plot of nearly 500,000 square metres, about two kilometres from the Giza Pyramids plateau, according to The National.

It has been in the works since a worldwide architectural competition was announced in 2002.

But completion has had several delays because of political and economic instability after the 2011 revolution, and travel and tourism challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The venue is slated to open in late 2021.
