RIJKDOM

's Werelds 500 rijkste mensen zijn $7,6 biljoen waard

By Ninian Carter

January 5, 2021 - The world’s 500 richest people increased their combined net worth by $1.8 trillion in 2020 and are now worth $7.6 trillion, a 31% increase.

Bloomberg's Billionaires Index shows the world's top 500 billionaires increased their net worth in 2020 by $1.8 trillion to $7.6 trillion – the largest annual leap in fortune since the index began in 2012.

The gains are very high among the top five individuals who each hold fortunes in excess of $100 billion, with another 20 people worth at least $50 billion each.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos remains the world’s richest person thanks to a surge in online shopping during numerous pandemic lockdowns.

However, Elon Musk gained the most during 2020, with possibly the fastest wealth surge ever recorded, jumping to second place after the value of Tesla soared.

As the world continues to wrestle with the global Covid-19 pandemic, suffering soaring unemployment and tumbling growth, billionaires still manage to reap unimaginable wealth, proving that they truly do operate in a different orbit to the rest of us.
