Groeiende angst voor tweede golf coronavirus

July 27, 2020 - The coronavirus pandemic is growing faster than ever worldwide, with almost twice as many countries reporting a spike in new cases over the past two weeks as those reporting significant declines.

Covid-19 cases have been increasing in more than 70 countries, including the United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Spain, Japan, Belgium, Vietnam and Israel, according to a New York Times database.

By contrast, only around 30 countries have reported a decreasing trend in infections, including Chile, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sweden and Portugal.

Many countries, especially those where officials eased earlier social distancing lockdowns, are experiencing a second peak more than a month after recording their first, Reuters said.

The United States remains the country most affected by the pandemic, with more than four million cases and almost 150,000 deaths. Brazil and India have also exceeded one million cases.

Worldwide there have been more than 16 million cases of the coronavirus and almost 650,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The true numbers of both cases and deaths are almost certainly underreported, particularly in countries with poorer health care systems, health experts and officials say.
