Monday’s official figures were published after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday that manufacturing and construction workers should be encouraged to go back to their jobs, drawing concern from trade union groups, Reuters reported.

Men in low-skilled occupations suffered 21.4 coronavirus-related deaths per 100,000 – more than double the average for working-age males, according to the ONS figures.

ONS analysed 2,494 Covid-19 deaths from the working population in England and Wales up to and including April 20, 2020.

Nearly two-thirds of the deaths were men compared to women.

Male security guards, taxi drivers and chauffeurs, bus drivers, chefs and construction workers were among those most at risk, the research found.
