April 23, 2020 - Volgens het Amerikaanse departement van Arbeid hebben sinds de VS in lockdown ging vanwege de coronapandemie, meer dan 26 miljoen Amerikanen hun baan verloren.

Just two months ago, new claims were below 300,000 per week. However, the record surge in suddenly unemployed Americans grew by another 4.43 million in the week to April 18. This increase pushed the total to 26,461,000 since the coronavirus pandemic shut down large parts of the U.S. economy on March 20.

In the prior four weeks, coronavirus layoffs surged by more than 5.25 million, 6.6 million, 6.9 million and 3.3 million respectively, using seasonally adjusted figures. Since mid-March, roughly 16.2 percent of the nation’s workforce has filed for benefits as businesses shut down to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Some economists say the unemployment rate could reach as high as 20 percent. That would be the highest jobless rate since the Great Depression, when it reached 25 percent following the stock market crash of 1929.

Throughout the economy, non-essential businesses have closed, with layoffs spreading from front-line service industries including restaurants, bars, hotels and retail stores to white-collar and professional occupations.

The latest jobless claim figures show that all of the 22.4 million jobs created since the end of the 2008-09 recession have been wiped out in just five weeks. At least 8.7 million jobs were lost in 2008-09 following the global financial crisis.
