The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook sees the U.S. economy shrinking 5.9 per cent this year and eurozone countries faring even worse, plummeting more than seven per cent.
The IMF cut its estimate for global economic growth by a staggering 6.3 percentage points from January to -3% -- “under the assumption that the pandemic and required containment peaks in the second quarter for most countries in the world, and recedes in the second half of this year.”
“This makes the Great Lockdown the worst recession since the Great Depression, and far worse than the global financial crisis” that began in 2007, wrote IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath.
The eventual recovery, which remains uncertain will not likely make up for the lost output, the IMF said.
The cumulative loss to global GDP over 2020 and 2021 from the pandemic crisis could be around $9 trillion -- equivalent to the economies of Japan and Germany, combined.
