March 11, 2020 - Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged a £30bn package to help the UK economy respond to coronavirus emergency in his first Budget. He warns that the outbreak will bring “significant” short-term impact with up to 20 per cent of the working-age population possibly incapacitated.
The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) says borrowing next year will total £54.8 billion, £14.6 billion higher than predicted last year.
By 2022, it’s forecast at £66.7 billion -- £29.1 billion higher than previously predicted.
And while officials predict the figure will have fallen to £60.2 billion by 2024, that figure is still £26.9 billion higher than was predicted just 12 months ago.
The OBR figures don’t include the £30 billion fiscal stimulus package announced by the Chancellor.
