China sluit Wuhan en andere steden af tegen verspreiding dodelijk virus

January 23, 2020 - China has closed off the city of Wuhan, home to more than 11 million people, in an effort to try to contain a deadly new viral illness that has sickened hundreds and spread to other cities and countries in the Lunar New Year travel rush. Huanggang, a neighbouring city about 80km to the east, and several other cities are also under restrictions.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The number of cases reported is changing rapidly at the moment. The data reported by the Associated Press comes from the National Health Commission in China. The data reported by the WHO is currently lagging behind.

At least 17 people have died in China and more than 600 have been confirmed as infected as the Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread throughout Asia and across the world.

Wuhan, the city of 11 million people where the outbreak began, is under lockdown in an effort to contain the spread. Huanggang, Ezhou, and the smaller cities of Chibi and Zhijiang, all in Hubei province, are also under restrictions.

Authorities in the Chinese capital Beijing have cancelled all large-scale New Year celebrations to contain the spread of the virus.
