Protest tegen Franse pensioenhervorming

By Jordi Bou

December 5, 2019 - President Emmanuel Macron hoopt dat zijn zwaar omstreden herziening
van het pensioenstelsel de kosten van het huidige Franse systeem, een
van de duurste ter wereld, zal terugbrengen.

The planned overhaul of the French pensions system aims to streamline a complicated patchwork of provisions, but workers argue it will require them to work longer and will reduce their income.

Hundreds of thousands of French workers are marching through Paris and other cities on the first day of an indefinite national strike, disrupting transport and posing the biggest challenge to Macron since the gilets jaunes demonstrations began a year ago.

France currently has a system comprising dozens of different schemes and Macron wants to create a unified system, which he says would be more fair.

His new plan aims to reward employees for each day worked, awarding points that would later be transferred into future pension benefits.

The popular discontent will test the resolve of the government of President Macron, who says it remains determined to pass the reform next year.
