Ekrem Imamoglu, the candidate of the main opposition Republican People’s party (CHP), who was confirmed as mayor in April, has called the decision “treacherous”.
Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council revoked Imamoglu’s mandate after determining that some electoral officials were improperly appointed.
Meanwhile, Binali Yildirim, the candidate for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development party (AKP), has said that he intends to run again.
The AKP Party-led alliance won 51% of vote nationwide in March, but the secularist CHP claimed victory in the capital Ankara, Izmir, and Istanbul, where Erdogan had once been mayor.
