April 22, 2019 - Bij gecoördineerde zelfmoordaanslagen afgelopen zondag op kerken en luxe hotels in Sri Lanka zijn 290 mensen omgekomen, waaronder 32 buitenlanders, en meer dan 500 gewond.
The targets included St Anthony’s Shrine, Colombo; St. Sebastian’s, Negombo; Zion Church, Batticaloa; Kingsbury Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, and Cinnamon Grand in Colombo. There were two explosions during police raids in Colombo, and a pipe bomb was defused near Colombo’s main airport on Sunday night.
Foreigners killed include British citizens, and U.S., Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Danish, Dutch and Portuguese nationals
Around 7.6 per cent of mainly Buddhist Sri Lanka is Catholic, but the religion is seen as a unifying force because it includes both Tamil and majority Sinhalese ethnic groups.
