Jan 14-27, 2019: Serena Williams aiming for record eighth Australian Open trophy
AUSTRALIA - The Australian Open Tennis Championship, the first Grand Slam of 2019, sees Serena Williams aiming for a record eighth Women’s Singles win at the Melbourne tournament. It also sees Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal competing for the Men’s Singles trophy and the coveted No. 1 world ranking.
Caroline Wozniacki enters the competition as the defending champion. The 2018 Australia win was the first Grand Slam singles trophy for the Danish tennis star. Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam winner, who had given birth just three months before the tournament, didn’t enter the competition. Double Melbourne Park champion Victoria Azarenka is also expected to compete.
Federer is the defending champion. Nadal pulled out because of injury, but went on to win the 2018 French Open. He is struggling to move past ankle and knee issues.
The so-called Big Three of men’s tennis are the year-ending top three – something that last happened in 2014.
