VS verscheept in stilte ATACMS-raketten voor lange afstand naar Oekraïne

April 25, 2024 - Ukraine has begun using long-range ATACMS missiles – quietly shipped by the U.S. – against Russian forces. The weapons are part of a $300m aid package approved by President Biden in March.

The long-range missiles were used for the first time in the early hours of April 17, launched against a Russian airfield in Crimea that was about 165km from the Ukrainian front lines, Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed U.S. official as saying.

And the new missiles were also used in an attack on Russian troops in the occupied port city of Berdyansk overnight on Tuesday.

The U.S. previously supplied Ukraine with a mid-range version of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) but had been reluctant to send anything more powerful, partly over concerns about compromising US military readiness.

However, Biden is said to have secretly given the green light to send the long-range system – which can fire missiles distances of up to 300km in February.
