Wapenwedloop Koreaans schiereiland verhit (1)
September 13, 2021 - North Korea fired a pair of ballistic missiles off its east coast, South Korea's military said, ratcheting up regional tensions just days after testing a cruise missile with possible nuclear capabilities.
The test of a new long-range cruise missile is seen by analysts as possibly the country’s first such weapon with a nuclear capability.
The weekend tests saw missiles travelling up to 1,500km before hitting their targets and falling into the country's territorial waters, the official KCNA news agency said.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula rose sharply in 2017, when North Korea successfully tested a new
intercontinental ballistic missile able to reach anywhere in U.S.
A series of tit-for-tat weapons buildup between the two Koreas signaled that the rival militaries were arming themselves with increasingly powerful missiles that can fly farther and carry more destructive power, and that are harder to intercept.
